Days Events:

Wx - forecast changed from yesterday to TSM, severe, with winds up to 27mph in afternoon between here and Oswego; so we decided prudence was in order and will defer travel [again] until tomorrow. Folks here were happy to have us stay another day, of course.

Travel - Marg took the courtesy car for groceries.

Photos - Marg took another nightscape; also one of the captain rolling up the water hose in preparation for leaving the next a.m. [prematurely it now appears].

Admirals Desk:

Just returned from the grocery store. I could have managed without going but I hate to not take advantage of a courtesy car. Went to Wegmans, a regional chain. Big store, big selection of everything. The bakery was impressive, as well as the deli. But the really impressive aisle was the craft beer!! The build your own 6-pack had easily 100 choices in alphabetical order, as was the boxed stuff. Very busy aisle! Rob has several beer and bakery selections to sample. [Capt. - my definition of dying and going to heaven is for me to drop dead in a bakery with innumerable varieties of baked goods and sweets to choose from -- and then have to live the rest of eternity there sampling them!! :) ]

Headsets: as Rob has mentioned they are more than worth their cost! Good communication makes a huge difference. I can calmly, and in a normal voice say "stern to port" and not have to yell "I SAID STERN TO PORT!! STERN TO PORT!! OH CRAP, THERE'S A BIG ANCHOR IN MY FACE!! GO FORWARD!!

That's all for today.

Humor:

Dick Blue sent some cute ones:

  • You're never childless when you have a husband!
  • Marriage is a relationship in which one is always right and the other is the husband.!
  • Whenever someone says to me, "Oh, you look so familiar, where do I know you from?" I like to respond with, "Do you watch porn?"

Maintenance:

Checked the generator - oil etc all ok.

Browsing through the great ship store here and found a 2nd boat pole for backup - mostly for when we have to use ropes in locks and there's a long reach to grab the rope - now can keep a pole at both the stern and the bow.

Cleaned 2 of the fenders after the rust and crud beating from the Erie locks; still need some Soft-Scrub on them but will wait until after the Oswego canal is done.

Worried one or both of us could lose a headset when bending over [which has happened to other loopers] so will try to use one of the glasses 'holders' and a safety pin to attach to our suspender PFD [Personal Flotation Device]. Too pricey to drop one overboard. The headsets are known as 'marriage-savers'!! They certainly make our communication easier -- some loopers wear them anytime they are underway and not able to see one another.

Travel Plans - we have everything scheduled now to Horizon Marina.

Marg said I should tell folks about one marina receptionist/dockmaster who I booked a stay with: she told me which slip we would be in, where it was, why to be stern in, etc; but that she wouldn't be there when we arrived because she was taking her day off; I joked with her that she couldn't do that and we would be sorry to miss her. Her reply was that she would leave all the information with the guys she worked with but -- that they were 'wrench-turners' and would likely not get it organized correctly; but she definitely wanted to meet me the next day when she came back. Marg just about fell off the couch laughing when she overheard this conversation! :) Marina staff are a great bunch - both the 'desk/phone-burners' and the 'wrench-turners'.

Now - T-4

Tomorrow - we definitely head for Oswego.

That's all today.

Stay safe.

Comments:

Ann - 29 Aug 2020: Can’t believe y’all are close to coming home! Maybe the virus won’t spike from Labor Day. Remains to be seen.... stay safe and socially distant! Look forward to eventually seeing you (once we come out of self imposed isolation.) I love the pictures and your blog (other than Rob’s nitty gritty about holding tank and similar, but hey, he’s a doc!). Love, Ann
